Short BiographyMasaki Umejima is the deputy chairman of Smart House and Building Committee, Japan Smart Community Alliance [JSCA], which is the industry and government liaison to drive demand side energy management systems like HEMS and BEMS in Japan. Since the inauguration, he has addressed international strategy.
JSCA has promoted ECHONET Lite, which brings network access to every home appliance, e.g. a power meter and an electric vehicle. In addition, International Electrotechnical Commission [IEC] has certified ECHONET Lite to be an international standard interface. Umejima has driven this movement as the Councillor of International Affairs in ECHONET Consortium.
In his academic career, since joining Keio University, the oldest private university in Japan, Umejima has addressed research on infrastructure design in energy and wireless telecommunication. Mr. Umejima is the associate director of Auto ID Laboratory, which has implemented research on the internet of things, involved MIT, Cambridge, and other international research institutions, and takes a leadership on entrepreneurial education within the Asian wide university alliance, SOI Asia.
